What do you mean by free space here? Unpartitoned or partitioned but not 
formatted or partitioned and formatted but no data on it.

What is graphical display? Linux or free space?

run cfdisk. Create some partition on that disk. Use mkfs to format those 
partitions. Use mount to mount that formatted partition on a mount point. For 
permanent results, put a line in /etc/fstab.

Make sure that mount point is an existing dir.
