Wait there are few things that we ned to discuss before we proceed.. Look at 
this..

$ grep -i postgres lsopenfiles|grep -i ipv4|wc -l
     35

You are running 35 connections to postgres? I suggest you tune your system. 
Memory/disks and things like that.

And for your question, I would say a figure of 16384 should be better. But I 
suggest you also look at open database connections. Close them if you don't 
need. Also do not run any unnecesary service on that box. What is that rpc 
business in there all about.

I suggest to make it a dedicated database server if you are going to beat it 
like that. IIRC the server specs are celeron/512MB right?

No I suggested you to run lsof in cronjob so that you can see who is opening 
the files and leaves them open. I am sure running out of file descriptors is 
not a fequent event on a linux box.

Which distro BTW? I hope you are running on a 2.4 kernel(Sorry for missing any 
details in your earlier mails. It's been long I have gone thr. it. I hope you 
don't mind reposting some of specs..)
