Do you get a line like 220 my.mail.server ESMTP Postfix when you telnet to SMTP port? Then your postfix is running fine. Just type: EHLO buddy.of.long.time and watch the response you get. If AUTH LOGIN doesn't come up, you have a problem. The EHLO above is important, BTW.
