And for all it's trouble worth I would recommed reinstalling everything with 
following partition scheme

1)/dev/hda1 4GB FAT for Windows c:
2)/dev/hda2 3GB for linux /
3)/dev/hda3 swap 256MB
4)/dev/hda4 extended everything else.

And put lilo on /dev/hda2.
In general it's a good idea to install only windows OS on c: and keep 
everything else on some other drive. c: still swells with new installations but 
usually doesn't overflow.

And since you have two OS's running, you don't need to wipe out your machine 
entirely. Uninstall all windows software, back up data on linux partitiona and 
reinstall windows. Restore all data and reinstall linux. It's time consuming 
but painless and easy.

Partition schema's cause much more trouble then it's apparent..:-)
