It is a good thing to have, but not strictly "necessary".
However, do keep in mind that some mailservers (such as those at freebsd.org)
require that the sending IP have reverse DNS. And yahoo was / is thinking of
this measure, from what I read on a list some months back.
So yes, it is an ever increasing necessity, in some cases.
