My kernel source is in /usr/src/linux
There is no version number there.
I always use -p1

However, if the diff was against 2.4.x and I'm applying the patch to 
2.4.y, it may not patch correctly - no matter what -p I use.  Even if it 
did patch correctly, it still may not compile.
