This indicates that the kernel has loaded normally, but you are
getting stuck up in the init process, somewhere in the initial-
isation scripts. This should not be there in most default inst-
alls. Are you sure of doing a  badblocks check during the init-
ial formatting/ installation ?

Being a first time install, it would be difficult to know why.
Re-installation is the answer, but leave everything to default
values.
