To kill a zombie, you have to kill its parent mysql process.
# mysqladmin -uroot -p status
# mysqladmin -uroot -p shutdown
then try starting mysql again

Do you long for a change of the default font at boot up ? Look
at the kbd fonts in /usr/lib/kbd/consolefonts installed by the
"kbd" package". man setfont for details ... You may prefer to
include the line in your.bashrc ...
Try : $setfont /usr/lib/kbd/consolefonts/b.fnt.gz
