http://www.x.org/ has the X protocol explained, and some good docs..

Why not ? That is _exactly_ what X is supposed to do. The X-server runs
locally, while the X-clients might run locally or remotely. A true c-s
relationship they share. You can also go through the
http://www.xfree86.org/ site (The Open Source implementation of
X-server) for further info..
