Do a su - vscan first, in your initscript?  Or check if amavisd has flags for
which user to startup as?

I have a sneaking suspicion this is already documented in the amavisd faq, or
has already been discussed on the amavis mailing list.

To get the  ls of directories only without a listing of files
in that directory: '$ls -d */' .... if you are on bash shell.
You may alias a command ( alias lsd='ls -d */' ) and place it 
in your .profile or the sytem /etc/profile ...
