ok, reconfiguring X isn't something I wanted to do just yet, so I hit
upon this solution:

xmodmap -e keycode 79 = agrave
        -e keycode 80 = acircumflex
        -e keycode 81 = eacute
        -e keycode 83 = egrave
        -e keycode 84 = icircumflex
        -e keycode 85 = ocircumflex
        -e keycode 87 = ugrave
        -e keycode 88 = ccedilla

Research is what I'm doing when I don't know what I'm doing.
