Sorry for the late reply, was out of town. Thanks to all who have replied. But the answers I got are sidestepping the problem. I have tried XFdrake, ALSA is on and starts at boottime, mixer is on, the problems remain the same. For Internet connection, in KDE, I did not see anything like kppp in the menus.
Anyway, I have reinstalled RH7.2, and hope to explore MDK8.2 sometime later when I have more free time.
