Hmm ... LILO is on the MBR, and that has been overwritten !

That meand he has put a M$ MBR, and he can boot into  DOS  but not
Linux ...

Pull out the 1.44 from your box ... walk over to his machine. Open
cover, search for loose power/ data  cables  in the  loose  things 
that you see ... check if it is A: or  B: after  booting into DOS.
Put a floppy containing loadlin.exe, and dual boot through config.
sys or autoexec.bat. You may take a peek at my  home page,  if you

Yes, you need a  copy of the boot sector as a file. There are some
old software available for this. Alternatively, do through a linux
rescue/ stand-alone distro, and dd the image.
