# dd if=/dev/cdrom of=cdimage.iso

This will create an exact image of the cd on your hard disk called
cdimage.iso. Than burn this image using cdrecord.

If you want to burn VCD's than the above method won't work(it is only for
data CD's). You will have to use cdrdao to burn VCD's. Search on google for
cdrdao and you will get the page ( I think http://cdrdao.sourceforge.net ).
