As a matter of fact there are some parameters that one can give at LILO 
prompt. 
But I am no lilo expert.
I am writing this just to remind you that during the bootup process, you are 
asked to enter "I" to enter INTERACTIVE startup.
Have you tried it? It might just solve your problem.
Or it may not. Then probably , the lilo experts might come in handy.
