Sorry for bringing the topic again after that long thread of mail on
this topic, but the question I asked about the quick starter applet had
gone unanswered. I was able to figure out how to solve it.
So for those interested on getting rid of the long start-up time of
OO, here's how's to do it. the gnome quick starter applet (made by an
Indian and the link is available on www.openoffice.org), requires open
office (OO) to be installed in the /usr/local directory with local files
in the home dir. but I think the trick is that you need to install the
Quick starter applet only after you have installed OO in /usr dir. I was
stuck on it for long time, I was trying the opposite. the base dir is
/usr/local/OpenOffice1.0, that should solve it, assert the quick start
option.
the start-up time is really reduced and the boot up time doesn't
increase noticibly(unlike in windows, that's heresay). there's a quick
starter also available for KDE but it requires KDE3.0 .
to continue the argument on OO, here's why I think it scores over MS
Office95,97( believe me, I made my project report on it-124 pages),
1. it got some cool graphical bullets, more than what staroffice5.2, it
adds a eye-catching effect to your document.
2.it has got numerous shortcuts to get your work done really fast and
get it done beautifully-its got this versitile toolbar that changes
giving you short cuts to handle tables and pictures.
3.its got good compatibilty with MSoffice and seamless integration with
the different versions for other platforms
4.it compresses files when you save it in OO format(XML), don't use it
when autosaving, it takes time to save, use soffice format before
finally saving it as OO format. I was able to save my project report in
700KB while MSword and soffice formats required 1.8MB+. this is a great
feature when you need to transmit files over the internet. I was doing
it all the time.
5.some people say its difficult to use, but that's when you're used to
MS office learning some thing new will require some effort and but its
worth the effort, its delibrately been made to look similair to MSoffice
to reduce the learning curve.
4. best of all its open source

now to some of the problems-its still in 1.0 version so it requires some
bugs cleaned up, it tended to crash when figures overflowed across
pages(but seen only in the windows version).
hope this long mail helps remove some of the doubts about Openoffice
which I noticed in mail on the list. being kinda newbie I don't consider
it too bad, I do all my work on it.
Long live open source!!
