I'm not sure whether this is making a difference but in the original 
script there is no space between "=" and "1". 
>>     val=${var[$num]:=1}

If you've copied-pasted the error message, there is a space between 
these two... however if this is just a typo, then I guess ksh and bash are 
not the best of friends...!

Maybe, I'll try something on the lines of the already suggested 
solutions on the list...
