actually, sometimes it is required. 49% of the time, vsnl provides a prompt, and 49% of the time it doesn't. 2% of the time you cannot login because of insufficient resources (the error message is incorrect password). Also, 20% of the time, the username prompt is login: and 80% of the time it is Username: Simple chat does not work in the latter case, but i've been able to make it work for former case with (something like) this: TIMEOUT '7' '>' - '' 'ppp' don't remember the exact syntax, I have it at home, but if you check the chat man page, you can see how to do it. > BTW Why not use wvdial? best option. takes care of all possibilities. except, you have to run it as root. better option is to run it through userhelper, and have a /etc/pam.d/wvdial file.
