actually, sometimes it is required.  49% of the time, vsnl provides a 
prompt, and 49% of the time it doesn't.  2% of the time you cannot login 
because of insufficient resources (the error message is incorrect 
password).

Also, 20% of the time, the username prompt is login: and 80% of the time 
it is Username:

Simple chat does not work in the latter case, but i've been able to make 
it work for former case with (something like) this:

TIMEOUT '7'
'>' - '' 'ppp'

don't remember the exact syntax, I have it at home, but if you check the 
chat man page, you can see how to do it.

best option.  takes care of all possibilities.  except, you have to run 
it as root.  better option is to run it through userhelper, and have a 
/etc/pam.d/wvdial file.

I have this set up at home, will send it when I get there.
