OK, so I updated to sendmail-8.12.5 (don't ask me how -- it was a nightmare) and enabled nice things like STARTTLS to add some more masala to the `national security' moral keepers' ulcers, and it's working beautifully. Lot's of encrypted data going in and out of my machine, and if the desi Carnivore equivalent manages to crack it I'll be the first to shake them by their (metaphorical) hand. Whether being able to read Swahili messages posted on ILUGD and LIH and offers for cheap inkjet cartridges (WE PAY SHIPPING!!! -- makes me want to buy a deskjet sometimes) will do them any good or not is a different matter.
So, onto the problem. I've enabled Cw in sendmail.mc to my local machine name (mail.linux-delhi.org) and added that hostname to /etc/mail/local-host-names, and despite my /etc/nsswitch.conf listing hosts and dns in that order, sendmail insists on sending all mail for *@mail.linux-delhi.org to the smart relay host. Bit of a pain, because I have to wait for system-generated messages to go to another country, come back to India and then back to my machine to read them. Is this a known problem (point me at the FAQ if so) or is there something simple I'm missing? Mail to *@localhost, *@localhost.localdomain, *@[ip.ad.re.ss], etc works just fine otherwise. Any help appreciated.
