Hi,

There are two ways for u to run *.dat 
(1) Rename *.dat to *.mpg and run it in Kde Media Player "noatun" or  Gnome 
Media Player "gtv"
(2) Install other vedio player as xine
There are many vedio player for this, I'll suggest to use "xine" see this link
