i get this error if i run "vi" instead of "vim" alias vi to vim in your
bashrc to over come this, or simply type "vim" to invoke  vim. also AFAIK
the command to enable syntax highlighting is ":syn on" or ":syntax on".

never used Emacs, but i would suppose that this should be possible too.
