I disagree. It's the rpm program which is brain dead not the rpm package 
format. Besides rpm programs throws good enough hints as in what's required. 
When nothing else works, one can open an rpm with cpio/mc and find out what 
it is.

Lot of people have started with rpm based distro and have become power users 
over the years. Their preferences might have changed over the years but that 
matters with technical merit of each distro and not the person itself..

Don't blame rpm/RedHat. If one does not willing to learn, he/she can not do 
many things. It's just that some tools will choke at level 0 while others at 
level 1. That's irrelevent.
