I just tried out GNOME 2.0. I downloaded the full source code from GNOME
site, and installed it. The download is about 55 Megs, which includes Gtk
2.0 to GNOME panel applets. The installation went without much hassles,
except that package foo may depend on bar which depends on baz, which needs
some time to figure out. Precompiled packages are available for Redhat and
Debian (only for Unstable).

Here're some differences I've noted. Ofcourse, I may be missing many
points. ;-)

* Gtk 2.0 has broken compatibility with 1.x versions at both source code
and binary levels, which means that existing Gtk applications should be
  rewritten in the coming future.

* Right click menus have been added to Gtk text/entry widgets.

* The Emacs style key bindings are disabled in Gtk widgets by default, but
may be enabled by adding a line to ~/.gtkrc.

* Many Gtk/GNOME utils have not yet been ported. But they will work as the
  needed libraries can co-exist.

* New stock icons for GNOME.

* Nautilus is now much faster, and better integrated.

* Gnome-terminal can now play fullscreen (but should be supported by window
  manager, I think).

* Many people are now touting a new window manager called "Metacity" as the
default one for the 2.x series of GNOME, dumping(?) Sawfish.

* AFAIK, Glade has not yet been ported to 2.0.

* GDM now supports something called "Graphical greeter", ie GDM is now
'themeble'. The themes can be specified in some XML format, and the end
result is a login screen which beats the one of WinXP. GDM themes are now
  available in many sites.
