Most often when you get mail from a pop server, you delete it from the 
server.  What happens if you do not delete the mail?  The next time you 
retrieve your mail, you will get duplicates.  Instead, if you check 
UIDLs, you can ensure that you only get new mails.

fetchmail uses the uidl method if you ask it to.
