If they are TTF fonts, I think you'll need to run xfstt (true
type font server for X). It generally serves fonts on port 7101
so after you start it up (make sure it looks in the right
places - man xfstt for more info), you can issue an

xset fp: unix/:7101
xset fp rehash

to add the fonts to your fontpath. After that, xfontsel should
show the fonts.
