Are you sure that you are using the correct Xserver? If you are using XFree86 < 4.0, the config file is /etc/X11/XF86Config. For XFree86 > 4.0, its /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 on RedHat systems. To find out which Xserver the RedHat installation is currently using, run "X -probeonly". Depending on the X version, add the sw_cursor option in the correct config file. See "man s3virge" and "man XF86_S3" (IIRC).
