Hello everybody,

Can someone explain what hostid actually indicates?
On my linux box, hostid command gives a number. Now, I
created a file /etc/hostid, and put a number there. now,
hostid command gives a different number, but not the one
I put in the file /etc/hostid.
Can the hostid be changed arbitrarily. What is its use?
I have got no ethernet card, but somewhere (I forgot where)
I read that the hostid is somehow related to the ethernet card's
hardware address.

Regards,
Santanu Chatterjee
