Hotmail has several MXs (at least a dozen). You can safely take that
smtproute out if "dig hotmail.com MX" returns anything at all.
Maybe hotmail's MXs are down or not reachable for some time, or maybe
hotmail was not resolvable from your dns cache / resolver for some reason
...
Oh ok - if you are running qmail anyway, install dnscache from djb's site -
and that should solve a lot of your problems and speed up mail delivery.
