Rsync over ssh would be a lot better. rsync is available for NT too.
And then tar to tape.
Or just pkzip the NT stuff, and scp to a Linux box (cron+wsh scripting).
Running SMB over the Internet makes me nervous (but then, so does running windows). 
SMB probably would need a VPN to be secure.
