I do not know what you mean by "image" of LILO. LILO is merely
a boot loader. It has no image per se. There are two things
that you may want:
a) Copy the existing boot image of LILO boot sector to a file.
#dd if=/dev/hdxN of=filename bs=512 count=1
b) Place boot record on another partition or floppy, for which
lilo (the exececutable) program is to be used.See LOST #298
below. What lilo does is place a boot sector record (taking
requisite info from /etc/lilo.conf) ... This merely places
the boot sector. The actual job is completed by other things
under your /boot like boot.b, chain.b, map etc. Without the
things in /boot, your boot process cannot proceed.
Hope this clarifies some things ...

Placing LILO on root partition instead of MBR maybe needed for
a dual boot system where the other OS is at MBR.After checking
/etc/lilo.conf, do: '#lilo -v -v -C /etc/lilo.conf -r /' .. If
/boot is the bootable partition change / to /boot.
