It may be active already if compiled already in the kernel. This 
is on at boot time. Check out with dmesg, and see what  is occu-
pying what. This is my output:

bish@aedes:~$ dmesg | grep parport
parport0: PC-style at 0x378 [SPP,PS2]
lp0: using parport0 (polling).
bish@aedes:~$

Possible that parport0 is already being used by your printer
or some other device.

Possible, because  something is occupying  99,0  and mknod is
not able to proceed further. MAKEDEV is merely a shell front-
end for mknod, providing the correct major and minor numbers.
Pl note: there is "error in making /dev/parport0" ... this is
ensuing failure at creation, even if file does not exist.
