This could be because of either of these situations:

a) Your lilo.conf is not configured for lba32

b) You are faced with the 1024-voodoo, which is a problem with
   old bioses and older versions of LILO. If  yours  is an old
   machine, this is a  physical limitation  of LILO and cannot 
   be overcome ...  You need to dual boot through an alternate 
   method like loadlin (for 9x and ME) or through boot.ini (if
   on NT/2k/XP) ... or try grub.
