Is this as root, or as an user ? If it plays as root but not as 
an user you may like to check the permissions for  /dev/audio &
/dev/dsp. They should be set to 666.

This problem can come if the direct audio cable is not connected
(play through windows and check).

Can you play through console utilities like cdplay  or  work-
bone as an user ?

AFAIK, NO. Microsoft RIFF/WAV are supported. If you have "sox"
installed, man sox will give you the types of audio files that
may be possible to play through Linux.
