That's silly. abiword needs X to run with. Crontab runs in it's own shell which 
won't have X unless you told it to start..

Put a shell command  there something like 'find  / > ~/log.err'

And check whether log.err gets created with proper contents..

I suggest you read up few things. Cron is not the place to run desktop 
applications. It runs in background.. And in all guesses configured fine on 
your machine.. Just give it a proper job..
