hi,
If u want to directly enter as root u may need to comment some
authentication modules invocation lines in the /etc/pam.conf or
/etc/pam.d/login (if it is telnet) or /etc/pam.d/sshd (if it is sshd) . You
may also have to check if u have allowed root login in the sshd
configuratrion file(for ssh).

If you want to enter as a user and switch to root, su should be setuid to
root. If it is not then,  u need to change the permission of su by doing
chmod 4755 su
so that  it looks like the following.
$ ls -l su
-rwsr-xr-x   1 root     root        13208 Jun 11 14:26 su
