system, i.e., not shared over the network with other
computers. "

As you see data in the /var will continue to grow as
you use the system. Since you are running as
workstation(assumed) , the rate os growth can be
small.

Check the available space daily. ( command is df )
Delete various unwanted files( log files etc.)

(Upgrade the hard disk in the next available occation,
anyway )
