I am using RH 7.2 on an athlon 855 w/ 128 mb ram. I upgraded the ram to
256 mb and switched on the machine. free and cat /proc/meminfo showed the
presence of the 256 mb of ram.

Suddenly on shutdown as well as on rebooting, the system hangs with te
following (and similar error messsages)

on booting up...
---------------------------
Enabling swap space:
Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 55cfcfcf

(and some more alphanumeric gobbledegook that I can make no head or tail
of)
------------------------

etc/rc.d/rc line 125.
unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address
00000054
printing eip:

(and some more alphanumeric stuff)

Please help, this happens to be my machine at work and I really would like
to work on it in a few hours' time.

All help greatly appreciated. I have called the hardware chap to come and
remove the new ram chip but I would really like to know the reason for
these errors.

regards,

Sharukh.
