A friend of mine got dell laptop, the only problem is we couldnt get linux
to recognize the battery. The dell bios sucks, but supports apm. The main
problem being it does not go to suspend or standby automatically. We tried
ACPI that did not work either ( i guess mainly because it cannot determine
the battery level )

The screen blanking and hard disk spindown works ok, but still the thing
heats up a bit, (almost but not quite totally similar to a toaster ;). So
was thinking of firing up a daemon which will monitor the load and instruct
apm -S.

Can someone suggest a suitable file to monitor, i can monitor the idle
time as reported by "w", the /proc/loadavg file, but i guess there are
better options. Is there anywhere i can pick up the activity on X ( i.e
the stuff screensavers use )

Or if there are better solutions to this thats all the more better
