For the last 6-8 weeks I have been using a program called
mailfilter, which was introduced to me by Rajesh Fowkar. I
delete junk mails at the server itself before I run fetch-
mail. This is a portion of the man page:

--------------<snip>--------------------------

Mailfilter is a very flexible utility to get rid of
unwanted spam mails, before having to go through the trou-
ble of downloading them into the local computer. It offers
support for one or many POP3 accounts and is especially
useful for dialup connections via modem, ISDN, etc.

Mailfilter connects to any POP3 mail box and compares part
of its content to a set of user defined filter rules. That
way the spam gets deleted directly on the mail server.

-------------</snip>---------------------------

The only hassel is that new spammers crop up every day and
your rules get appended almost on a daily basis. These are
kept at ~/.mailfilterrc. Mine is 500+ lines already !
