Can you tell the version of Kernel and version of gcc
At the command prompt type the foll for the gcc
version. This might give you 2.96 which is not 
supported by gcc themselves.
gcc --version 

For kernel type the foll.
uname -v

I think the only way you can get around this prob
is download the stable gcc and compile and install.
Then compile the kernel ( Checkout the Howtos)
If there is a prbolem with the kernel compilation,
download the latest stable kernel from kernel.org.
and then compile the same.

Then continue with Ur PCTEL compilation.
