Here's another option. I remember using Akaram text editor successfully without 
knowing Tamil typing. I used the Anjal phonetic keyboard. You just have to type 
gaandhi or gaanti to get Gandhi. It's available here:

But there were some bugs in it when I used it a year back, the 'kombu' was broken. 
Dunno if they've fixed it.
