ext3 uses a journal to keep track of transactions that haven't yet been
commited to disk.
On a reboot, the ext3 driver will replay the journal to bring the disk
state upto date.
This is a major improvement from the fsck recovery process in ext2.

Having a UPS with ext2 is a godsend, but with ext3, a UPS helps but its
utility is significantly less critical (as far as disk corruption goes).
