Kword converts it to it'w own XML/zip format, zips it again, saves it and then throws UI to user. Basically it do does a a full import to kword before coming alive.. I know it's very bad but they have addressed it in later versions. Which version of kword are you trying? Try latest beta of KWord1.2.. should be much faster.. (BTW for lyx folks, I was surprised to discover that in KWord you can lock double spaces just like lyx. Hell, I was delighted..;-) It's not full-proff but much better than hand aligning paragraphs..)
