make sure only
smtp
pop3
imap

are open and all other non-essential sevices are stopped.

try to run pop3s and imaps and sasl with smtp.


Another thing you can do is
If you have a nice firewall like pix or check point, then place this mail
server in the DMZ zone and control services to this mail services from the
outerfirewall.
