somebody seems to have already done that. checkout http://acpi.sourceforge.net for 
hibernate, suspend etc features in linux. and also except for hibernate, other APM 
features are available in linux for a long time in the form of APMD. APMD can be used 
to suspend and other features in a laptop and monitor DPMS is also available in X 
server and the console for a long time.
