depends on what applications you choose, the method of install.
assuming that you chose ~ the same applications, and that you
installed from the cd's my *guess* would be that either one of the cd
was scratched/dirty or that your cdrom drive was malfunctioning.

i had a similar problem when one of my cdrom drives was giving errors,
going to one of the console windows CTRL-ALT-F2/3 i think should have
given you a clue.

3.5 hours? sheesh! i faced a similar situation when upgrading. so i
cancelled the upgrade and did a fresh install, taking care not to
format /home.
