Real Programmers don't program in BASIC.  Actually, no programmers 
program in BASIC after puberty.

All projects require time to stabilise.  With many different
implementations of a product, each can focus on different aspects and 
mature in that direction.  Once maturity is achieved, code can be merged 
from one to the other.

Competition is good.  It helps all improve.
