I took a peek at /etc/exim/exim.conf. Sad to say, I am totally out of my

'local_domains_include_host_literals' and so on ......

Done. Went through /var/log/exim/mainlog and found that
/var/spool/mail/user1, user2, user3 had the wrong permissions. Once that
was set right, all are now talking to each other.

Many thanks, now I owe you 2 coffees :D
