Many thanks, Sreangsu and Shridhar, for the inputs. Will now try to get
the necesary softwares together. In the meantime, have hooked up a
walkman to the line input of the sound card and tried recording using
the gnome sound recorder - reasonably satisfactory.

Is it possible to record wav files and later compress them to mp3 or
ogg? That would save space on the HDD.
