Hi Everyone,
I recently got to use a freeware smtp server "Advanced SMTP" on windows. Once You connect to the net using dialup The program must be run and You can send email directly from your machine to the recipient's server without making use of goatelecom smtp server.
Is there any such application for Linux or is there a way to configure sendmail postfix or exim to do the same?
any linux mta will do the same - and better than using the sort of rubbish that *usually* is available under the category of "freeware windows smtp server" (there are a few notable exceptions though).
Even then - I would recommend handing off mail to a remote smtp server for delivery - most ISPs block mail sent directly from known dialup pools, and goatelecom's dialup pool is "known" to most of the DUL type lists around.
See http://www.mail-abuse.org/dul/ for an explanation of why people block mail sent direct from dialups. Then - to configure linux MTAs to send to a smarthost - http://www.hserus.net/dlhowto.html
You don't need to use goatelecom's smtp server if it sucks that bad - several providers (softhome.net / gmx) offer free smtp auth to let you send out mail. Or you could spend a few dollars a month to pay for such an account.
